Leon Kristopher Smith


Leon Kristopher Smith NZGD was posthumously awarded the New Zealand Gallantry Decoration and the Charles Upham Bravery Award for his actions when attempting to resuscitate a mortally wounded colleague, while responding to an insurgent attack on the British Council Offices in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2011. Smith, who was a member of the New Zealand Special Air Service, was subsequently himself mortally wounded during a later operation in Afghanistan.

Smith was born onJuly 1978 and grew up in Wellington, New Zealand, before moving to Auckland with his work. He enlisted into the Royal New Zealand Navy onJanuary 1997 and was allocated the service number T1002840. Smith served with the Royal New Zealand Navy as a commissioned officer and was subsequently released in the rank of Ensign onJanuary 1999.
